Painting Description
The Tomb of Lorenzo de' Medici: Dawn [detail: 1] is a significant sculptural work by Michelangelo Buonarroti, housed in the Medici Chapel of the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence, Italy. This masterpiece forms part of the larger New Sacristy project commissioned by Pope Leo X and Cardinal Giulio de' Medici, the later Pope Clement VII, both members of the influential Medici family. The tomb is dedicated to Lorenzo de' Medici, Duke of Urbino, and grandson of Lorenzo the Magnificent.
Michelangelo's work on the tomb began in 1520 and continued intermittently until 1534, reflecting the turbulent political climate and the artist's own evolving artistic focus. The sculpture of Dawn is one of the four allegorical figures that accompany the sarcophagus of Lorenzo de' Medici, each embodying different times of the day, which together symbolize the perpetual cycle of life and death. Dawn, representing the morning, is sculpted as a female figure emerging from the night's slumber, her body twisting as if rousing from sleep.
The figure of Dawn, with its intricate detailing and expressive form, showcases Michelangelo's mastery in capturing human emotion and his deep understanding of anatomy. The sculpture is celebrated for its dynamic composition and the poignant melancholy that seems to reflect the broader existential themes Michelangelo explored throughout his oeuvre. This work, along with the other sculptures in the chapel, represents a significant development in Renaissance art, highlighting a shift towards a more personal and introspective approach to humanism.
