Painting Description
Pietà 2, also known as the Florentine Pietà or the Bandini Pietà, is a marble sculpture created by the renowned Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo Buonarroti. This work, which dates from around 1547 to 1555, is one of Michelangelo's later sculptures and reflects his deepening preoccupation with themes of mortality and redemption. Unlike his earlier and more famous Pietà housed in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, Pietà 2 is notable for its complex composition and emotional intensity.
The sculpture depicts the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, and Nicodemus supporting the dead body of Christ after his crucifixion. Michelangelo's portrayal of Nicodemus is particularly significant, as it is widely believed that the artist used his own likeness for this figure, thus embedding a personal element into the work. This self-representation can be interpreted as Michelangelo's meditation on his own mortality and his identification with the suffering of Christ.
Pietà 2 is characterized by its unfinished appearance, a feature that has intrigued art historians and scholars. The rough, unpolished surfaces and visible chisel marks suggest that Michelangelo may have intentionally left the sculpture incomplete, perhaps to convey the rawness of human suffering or as a reflection of his own spiritual and artistic struggles. Alternatively, some theories propose that Michelangelo abandoned the work due to dissatisfaction or physical difficulties, as he was in his seventies when he worked on it.
The sculpture was originally intended for Michelangelo's own tomb, but it was never used for this purpose. After Michelangelo's death, the work changed hands several times before being acquired by the Medici family. Today, Pietà 2 is housed in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Florence, Italy, where it continues to be a subject of admiration and study for its profound emotional depth and technical mastery.
