Painting Description
"The Last Judgment" is a monumental fresco by the Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo Buonarroti, painted on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. Commissioned by Pope Clement VII and completed under the patronage of Pope Paul III, the work was executed between 1536 and 1541. This grandiose representation of the Second Coming of Christ and the final and eternal judgment by God of all humanity covers the entire wall behind the altar and is one of the most iconic and influential works in the canon of Western art.
At the center of the composition is Christ the Judge, depicted with a powerful muscular form, surrounded by saints and angels, as he raises his right hand in a gesture that consigns the damned to Hell and with his left hand welcomes the saved to Heaven. Michelangelo's Christ is a departure from the traditional serene and majestic depictions of the subject; instead, he is portrayed as a forceful and wrathful figure, reflecting the changing religious and cultural attitudes of the Counter-Reformation period.
The fresco is notable for its dynamic composition, dramatic figures, and emotional intensity. Michelangelo's use of nudes in the fresco was controversial at the time and led to the "Fig-Leaf Campaign," where draperies and other coverings were added to some of the figures after the artist's death. The Last Judgment was a subject of intense debate and criticism both for its theological implications and its artistic innovation.
Michelangelo's Last Judgment has been studied extensively for its iconography, its stylistic and technical qualities, and its impact on the development of Western art. The fresco has been restored several times, most recently in a major project completed in 1994, which has allowed for a better understanding of Michelangelo's original color palette and technique, and has sparked renewed interest and scholarship in this masterpiece of the High Renaissance.
