Painting Description
"David" is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture created by Michelangelo Buonarroti between 1501 and 1504. The statue represents the Biblical hero David, a favored subject in the art of Florence. Originally commissioned as one of a series of statues of prophets to be positioned along the roofline of the east end of Florence Cathedral, the statue was instead placed in a public square, outside the Palazzo della Signoria, the seat of civic government in Florence, where it was unveiled on September 8, 1504.
Made from a single block of Carrara marble, the statue stands at a height of 17 feet (5.17 meters), making it a significant depiction of the theme of heroic resistance. David is depicted in a moment of contemplation, with a sling over his shoulder and a rock in his right hand, moments before his battle with Goliath. This representation of David is one of the most iconic and celebrated works of the Renaissance, showcasing Michelangelo's skill in depicting the human form in a dynamic and naturalistic manner.
The statue has been moved to the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence since 1873 to protect it from damage, and a replica stands in its original place in front of the Palazzo della Signoria. Michelangelo's David remains a prime example of Renaissance art and continues to draw the admiration of scholars and visitors from around the world.
