Painting Description
The "Plan de Paris" by Michel-Étienne Turgot, commonly referred to as the "Turgot Map," is an extraordinary cartographic masterpiece created in the early 18th century. Commissioned by Michel-Étienne Turgot, the Provost of the Merchants of Paris, the map was meticulously crafted between 1734 and 1739. This detailed and expansive map offers a bird's-eye view of Paris, capturing the city's intricate layout with remarkable precision and artistic flair.
The Turgot Map is celebrated for its exceptional detail and accuracy, providing a comprehensive snapshot of Paris during the reign of Louis XV. It consists of 21 sheets, each measuring approximately 50 x 80 cm, which together form a large-scale representation of the city. The map was engraved by Louis Bretez, a skilled artist and member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, who was granted access to the city's rooftops to ensure the utmost accuracy in his depictions.
One of the most striking features of the Turgot Map is its three-dimensional perspective, which allows viewers to see buildings, streets, and landmarks in a lifelike manner. This perspective not only highlights the architectural grandeur of Paris but also provides valuable insights into the urban planning and daily life of the time. The map includes detailed illustrations of notable structures such as the Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Louvre, and the Palais-Royal, as well as lesser-known buildings, gardens, and public spaces.
The Turgot Map is not only a remarkable work of art but also an invaluable historical document. It serves as a vital resource for historians, urban planners, and enthusiasts of cartography, offering a window into the past and a deeper understanding of Paris's development. Today, the map is preserved in various institutions, including the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, where it continues to be studied and admired for its artistic and historical significance.
