Painting Description
The Tomb of Francis II of Brittany and his Wife Marguerite de Foix is a monumental sculptural work created by French sculptor Michel Colombe and Jean Perréal, commissioned by Anne of Brittany, the daughter of Francis II, Duke of Brittany. Completed in 1507, the tomb is a masterpiece of French Renaissance sculpture and is located in the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre in Nantes, France.
The tomb is renowned for its intricate detail, high level of craftsmanship, and its historical significance as a representation of the transition from the medieval period to the Renaissance in France. It is made of Carrara marble and features a combination of Gothic and early Renaissance elements. The effigies of Francis II and Marguerite de Foix are depicted lying in repose atop the tomb, with their hands joined in prayer, symbolizing their piety and status.
Around the base of the tomb, twelve finely carved alabaster statues represent the Apostles, each characterized by individualized features and expressions, showcasing Colombe's skill in portraiture. The tomb also includes a series of bas-reliefs depicting scenes from the lives of the saints, as well as the coats of arms of Brittany and Foix, emphasizing the ducal couple's lineage and the political alliances of the time.
The Tomb of Francis II and Marguerite de Foix is not only a significant work of art but also serves as an important historical document, reflecting the cultural and political milieu of late 15th-century France. Its preservation and display in the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre continue to draw the attention of art historians, scholars, and visitors from around the world, making it a key piece in the study of French Renaissance art and the history of Brittany.
