Painting Description
Henry Bathurst, Bishop of Norwich, is a significant figure in the history of the Anglican Church, known for his progressive views and long tenure as a bishop. Born on October 16, 1744, in Brackley, Northamptonshire, Bathurst was the son of Benjamin Bathurst, a politician, and his wife, Catherine. He was educated at Eton College and subsequently at New College, Oxford, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1765 and his Master of Arts in 1767. Bathurst was ordained as a priest in 1768 and began his ecclesiastical career with various clerical appointments, including the rectorship of Witchingham and the vicarage of Cirencester.
In 1805, Bathurst was appointed Bishop of Norwich, a position he held until his death in 1837. His tenure as bishop was marked by his liberal and reformist stance, which often put him at odds with the more conservative elements of the Church of England. Bathurst was a vocal advocate for the abolition of slavery and supported the Catholic Emancipation Act of 1829, which aimed to reduce the restrictions on Roman Catholics in Britain. His progressive views extended to his support for the education of the poor and his efforts to improve the conditions of the clergy within his diocese.
The portrait of Henry Bathurst, engraved by T.A. Dean, is a testament to his enduring legacy. Dean, an engraver active between 1773 and 1840, captured Bathurst's likeness in a work that was published around 1835 by Michael William Sharp in the second volume of the National Portrait Gallery. This engraving is an important visual record of Bathurst, reflecting his dignified presence and the respect he commanded during his lifetime. The portrait is part of a larger collection that aims to document and celebrate notable figures in British history, providing valuable insights into the individuals who shaped the cultural and religious landscape of the nation.
