Painting Description
"Angel 1477-80" is a fresco fragment by the Italian Renaissance artist Melozzo da Forlì, created between 1477 and 1480. This artwork is renowned for its masterful use of foreshortening and perspective, which were innovative techniques during the Renaissance period. Melozzo was one of the early adopters of these methods, and his work on "Angel 1477-80" exemplifies his skill in creating the illusion of three-dimensional space on a flat surface.
The fresco originally adorned the apse of the Church of the Holy Apostles in Rome, where it formed part of a larger composition depicting the Ascension of Christ, surrounded by a host of angels. Unfortunately, the church underwent renovations in the 18th century, and Melozzo's frescoes were removed. The fragments were subsequently dispersed, with "Angel 1477-80" being one of the surviving pieces.
"Angel 1477-80" captures the image of an angel in motion, seemingly descending from the heavens. The figure is depicted from a low viewpoint, with its limbs outstretched towards the viewer, creating a dramatic and engaging visual experience. The use of light and shadow further enhances the three-dimensionality of the figure, showcasing Melozzo's expertise in chiaroscuro.
Today, the fresco fragment is held in the Pinacoteca Vaticana (Vatican Picture Gallery) in Vatican City, where it continues to be admired for its artistic significance and contribution to the development of Renaissance art. The work is not only a testament to Melozzo da Forlì's talent but also an important piece of cultural heritage that reflects the artistic innovations of its time.
