Painting Description
Gianlorenzo Bernini's Third Design for the East Facade of the Louvre, executed by his assistant Mattia de Rossi, represents a significant yet unrealized vision in the history of architectural design. Commissioned by King Louis XIV of France in the mid-17th century, Bernini's involvement in the Louvre project marked a notable intersection between Italian Baroque and French classical architecture. Bernini, renowned for his dynamic and expressive Baroque style, was invited to Paris in 1665 to propose designs for the Louvre's east facade, a project that was part of Louis XIV's grand plan to transform the Louvre into a royal palace befitting his reign.
The third design, which is often considered the most elaborate and ambitious of Bernini's proposals, sought to blend the grandeur of Baroque aesthetics with the classical symmetry favored in French architecture. Bernini's vision included a central pavilion with a grand entrance, flanked by two symmetrical wings adorned with columns and pilasters. The design emphasized verticality and movement, characteristic of Bernini's work, and aimed to create a sense of awe and majesty.
Mattia de Rossi, Bernini's trusted assistant, played a crucial role in translating Bernini's vision into detailed plans and models. Despite the innovative and grandiose nature of the design, it faced resistance from French architects and courtiers who preferred a more restrained classical approach. Ultimately, Bernini's designs were not realized, and the commission was awarded to a group of French architects led by Claude Perrault, whose more conservative and classical design was executed.
Bernini's third design for the Louvre remains a fascinating "what if" in architectural history, illustrating the tension between different stylistic preferences and the complexities of artistic patronage in the 17th century. Although never built, the design is studied for its bold vision and as an example of Bernini's architectural genius.
