Painting Description
"Malven" is a collection of four poems written by the Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke in 1924. The poems were entrusted to his friend and patron, Princess Marie von Thurn und Taxis, also known as Mathilde von Mestrovic after her marriage. The poems remained unpublished during Rilke's lifetime and were only discovered after the Princess's death in 1934. They were subsequently published posthumously.
The "Malven" poems are considered to be among Rilke's final works, as he died in December 1926. They reflect his mature poetic style, characterized by introspection, a complex interplay of images, and a deep exploration of existential themes. The title "Malven," which means "mallows" in German, suggests a connection to nature, a recurring motif in Rilke's poetry.
The collection is notable for its intimate tone and the delicate balance it strikes between the personal and the universal. Rilke's "Malven" continues to be studied and appreciated for its lyrical beauty and philosophical depth, contributing to the enduring legacy of one of the most important poets of the 20th century.
As with all unpublished works, the provenance and authenticity of the poems were of particular interest to scholars and literary historians. The "Malven" collection offers insights into Rilke's creative process and provides a poignant glimpse into the poet's final years.
