Painting Description
The ''Pisa Polyptych: Carmelite Monk 2'' is a panel painting attributed to the early Italian Renaissance master Masaccio (Tommaso di Giovanni di Simone Guidi, 1401 – 1428). This artwork was originally part of a larger polyptych, a multi-paneled altarpiece, commissioned by the wealthy notary Giuliano di Colino degli Scarsi da San Giusto for the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Pisa. The polyptych was created around 1426, during a period when Masaccio was increasingly recognized for his innovative approach to painting, characterized by a use of perspective, chiaroscuro, and a more naturalistic representation of figures.
The ''Carmelite Monk 2'' is one of the surviving panels from the dismantled polyptych. It depicts a standing Carmelite monk, identifiable by the brown scapular of the Carmelite order, engaged in prayer or contemplation. The figure is set against a gold background, which was typical of the Gothic style that still influenced Italian panel painting at the time. However, Masaccio's treatment of the figure's drapery and his attention to anatomical realism reflect the new Renaissance ideals.
The Pisa Polyptych was disassembled in the 18th century, and its panels were scattered across various collections. The ''Carmelite Monk 2'' panel has been subject to scholarly debate regarding its attribution and state of preservation. While the central panels of the polyptych are well-documented and attributed to Masaccio, some of the peripheral panels, possibly including ''Carmelite Monk 2'', have been considered by some experts to be the work of assistants or followers, reflecting the collaborative nature of workshop production during the Renaissance.
Today, the surviving panels of the Pisa Polyptych are housed in different museums and collections around the world. The ''Carmelite Monk 2'' contributes to the understanding of Masaccio's oeuvre and the stylistic transition from medieval to Renaissance art. It remains an important piece for studying the development of early 15th-century Italian painting and the influence of Masaccio's groundbreaking techniques on his contemporaries and successors.
