Painting Description
"Assumption of the Virgin" is a significant work of art created around 1408 by the Italian artist Martino di Bartolommeo, a prolific painter during the late Gothic period. Together with Giotto and the Lorenzetti brothers, Martino contributed to the transformation of Italian painting, although his style is heavily influenced by Simone Martini.
"Assumption of the Virgin" vividly illustrates the Virgin Mary's ascent into Heaven, central phenomenon in Christian theology. The portrayal is emblematic of the artistic norms of its time, showcasing Martino di Bartolommeo's adept use of colours and his capacity to depict emotions in the faces and postures of the characters.
The painting features the Virgin Mary in the centre, surrounded by angels bearing her into the sky. Below, the apostles observe in astonishment as one of their number attempts to touch the Virgin's empty tomb. The serene expression on Mary's face is in sharp contrast to the astonishment and grief visible in the expressions of the apostles below.
Though conventional for the time, Martino di Bartolommeo's ability to depict multiple emotional states, along with his masterful use of perspective to suggest both the earthly and divine realms, attest to the excellence of his artistry and his significant contribution to Italian art in the late Gothic period.
