Painting Description
The Japanese Tower of the Royal Park at Laeken, Belgium is a historically significant monument designed by the French architect, Alexandre Marcel. Alexandre Marcel was a reputable figure in architecture during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, known for predilection towards Oriental style. The creation of this structure dates back to 1905 when King Leopold II of Belgium, his visit to the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris, decided to purchase the pointed-roof tower showcased at the event. The King had the structure transported and reassembled at the The Royal Domain of Laeken, his Brussels residence.
Alexandre Marcel oversaw the deconstruction and reconstruction of the tower in Belgium. The Japanese Tower is essentially a pagoda-style building with a facade ornate with traditional Japanese motifs and designs. Marcel’s design blends elements of Japanese architecture seamlessly with European tastefulness, making the building a stunning blend of East meets West stylistically.
The Japanese Tower serves as an evident testimony to the continued fascination with Asian culture and aesthetics that permeated the western society during the fin de siècle period. Today, this genteel monument is a part of the larger complex which includes the Museum of Japanese Art, storing an extensive collection of Japanese artefacts from various historical periods.
