Painting Description
"The Fountain of Youth" (German: "Der Jungbrunnen") is a 1546 oil-on-panel painting by the German Renaissance artist Lucas Cranach the Elder. This allegorical work depicts a fountain with transformative powers that restore the youth of elderly women who bathe in its waters. The painting measures 186 cm × 120 cm and is part of the collections of the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, Germany.
In the painting, Cranach visualizes a popular legend of the time, where the aged enter a dilapidated, moss-covered pool and emerge rejuvenated on the other side, embodying the contemporary fascination with the quest for eternal youth and beauty. The composition is divided into several sections, narrating the transformation process. On the left, old women are helped into the fountain, in the center, they bathe and are attended to by cupids, and on the right, they emerge young and are courted by men.
Cranach's work is rich in detail and symbolism, reflecting both the moral attitudes and the whimsical fantasies of the 16th century. The painting also serves as a commentary on the social and cultural practices of the time, particularly those related to aging and beauty. The Fountain of Youth is a notable example of Cranach's later work and contributes to our understanding of Renaissance art and its themes.
