"Scenes from the Life of Alexander III" is a fourteenth-century fresco by the Italian painter Luca Spinello Aretino. Completed in the late 1380s, the fresco depicts a series of events in the life of Pope Alexander III. With its rich colors and detailed, sequential storytelling, the fresco demonstrates Aretino's mastery of the Early Renaissance style.
The fresco is located in the Church of Santa Maria Novella in, Italy. Each panel the fresco represents a different scene of Pope Alexander III's life, from his election to the papacy to his disputes with Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. Some of the most notable scenes include Pope Alexander’s exile in France, his return to Rome, and the submission of Barbarossa to him in Venice in 1177. These scenes are vividly rendered, filled with emotional expressions and subtle gestures that speak of Aretino's skill as a narrative artist.
Luca Spinello Aretino, born in Arezzo, was one of the most influential artists of his generation.
