Painting Description
"Maurus Saves Placidus" is a fresco by the Italian painter Luca Spinello Aretino, also known as Spinello Aretino, created in 1387. The artwork is part of a series of frescoes depicting the Life of Saint Benedict and is located in the Sacristy of the San Miniato al Monte, a basilica in Florence, Italy. The fresco illustrates a miraculous event from the life of Saint Benedict of Nursia, the founder of Western monasticism and the author of the Rule of Saint Benedict, which became a fundamental set of guidelines for monastic communities.
The scene captured in the fresco is based on a story from the second book of "Dialogues" by Pope Gregory the Great, which recounts the life and miracles of Saint Benedict. According to the tale, a young monk named Placidus, who was a disciple of Saint Benedict, fell into a lake while attempting to retrieve water. Saint Benedict, who was at the monastery, perceived the incident through spiritual insight and instructed another of his disciples, Maurus, to run and save Placidus. Maurus, in his obedience and haste, miraculously walked on water, thinking he was on solid ground, and rescued Placidus from drowning. Only upon returning to the shore did Maurus realize the miracle that had occurred, attributing it to the obedience and prayers of Saint Benedict.
Luca Spinello Aretino's fresco captures this dramatic moment with vivid detail and emotional intensity, characteristic of the Gothic style that was prevalent during the late 14th century. The artwork is significant for its portrayal of monastic virtues such as obedience, divine intervention, and the miraculous power of faith. It also serves as an important cultural artifact, reflecting the religious and artistic values of the time.
The "Maurus Saves Placidus" fresco is a valuable piece of the larger narrative cycle of the Life of Saint Benedict, which was a common subject in medieval art due to the widespread influence of the Benedictine Order. The cycle in San Miniato al Monte is particularly noted for its artistic quality and historical importance, offering insight into the development of Italian fresco painting and the visual storytelling of saints' lives during the late Middle Ages.
