Painting Description
"Isaac Sends Esau to Hunt" is a panel crafted by the Italian Renaissance artist Lorenzo Ghiberti for the eastern doors of the Florence Baptistery, which are also known as the Gates of Paradise. Created between 1425 and 1452, these doors are a seminal work of Renaissance art that marked a transition from the Gothic to the more naturalistic style characteristic of the Renaissance.
The panel is one of ten rectangular reliefs that depict scenes from the Old Testament, and it illustrates the moment from the Book of Genesis when Isaac, who is old and blind, sends his son Esau out to hunt game for a meal that he might bless him before he dies. This narrative sets the stage for the subsequent deception by Rebecca and Jacob, Esau's brother, who tricks Isaac into giving him the blessing meant for Esau.
Ghiberti's work on the doors was revolutionary for its use of perspective and the classical composition of figures, which showed a deep understanding of human anatomy and movement. The "Isaac Sends Esau to Hunt" panel, like the others on the Gates of Paradise, is noted for its use of schiacciato (flattened relief), a technique Ghiberti employed to create an illusion of depth in the relatively shallow space of the relief.
The Gates of Paradise, including the "Isaac Sends Esau to Hunt" panel, were cast in bronze and gilded, which added to their majestic appearance. The original panels, after undergoing extensive restoration, are now preserved in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Florence to protect them from environmental damage, while replicas adorn the Baptistery.
Ghiberti's work on the Baptistery doors was highly influential and is considered a masterpiece of Renaissance art. The "Isaac Sends Esau to Hunt" panel, in particular, demonstrates Ghiberti's skill in storytelling through composition and his innovative approach to relief sculpture, which would inspire generations of artists to come.
