Painting Description
''Virgin of the Rocks'' (Italian: ''Vergine delle rocce'') is the name used for two paintings by the Italian High Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci. The paintings are known for their exquisite detail and for the serene and enigmatic figures of the Virgin Mary, the Christ Child, Saint John the Baptist, and an angel, set against a mysterious rocky landscape. The first version, housed in the Louvre in Paris, was painted between 1483 and 1486, while the second, later version, which is the subject of this introduction, is located in the National Gallery, London, and was painted from 1495 to 1508.
The London version of the ''Virgin of the Rocks'' is believed to have been created due to a dispute over the original commission for the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception in Milan. The confraternity had commissioned the work for an altarpiece, but disagreements arose concerning Leonardo's financial compensation and the ownership of the original painting. As a result, Leonardo and his patrons agreed that he would retain the first version and create a second version for the confraternity.
The London painting measures 189.5 by 120 centimeters and is executed in oil on panel, a medium that allowed Leonardo to achieve a level of detail and luminosity that contributed to the work's ethereal quality. The composition of the second version is broadly similar to the first, with some notable changes in the positions of the figures and the landscape. The figures are arranged in a pyramidal composition within a cave-like setting, a characteristic of Leonardo's work that reflects his interest in the natural world and his studies of geology.
The ''Virgin of the Rocks'' is renowned for its use of sfumato, a technique developed by Leonardo that involves the subtle blending of colors and tones to create a smoky, atmospheric effect. This technique enhances the sense of depth and realism in the painting and contributes to the figures' lifelike presence.
The painting's iconography has been the subject of much scholarly debate. The inclusion of Saint John the Baptist and the angel, who is often identified as the Archangel Gabriel, suggests a narrative related to the biblical theme of the Holy Family's encounter with Saint John in a wilderness setting. The angel's pointing gesture and the gaze of the figures create a complex interplay of looks that invites contemplation and interpretation.
The ''Virgin of the Rocks'' in the National Gallery underwent a major conservation treatment in the late 2000s, which revealed new details about Leonardo's technique and the painting's history. The work remains one of the most studied and admired paintings by Leonardo da Vinci, reflecting the artist's mastery of painting, his deep understanding of human psychology, and his profound connection to the natural world.
