Painting Description
''Virgin of the Rocks'' (Italian: ''Vergine delle rocce'') is one of the two different paintings by the Italian Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci of the same subject, and of a composition which is identical except for several significant details. The version generally considered the prime version, that is the earlier of the two, is unrestored and hangs in The Louvre in Paris. The other, which is the one in the National Gallery in London, has been restored. Both show the Madonna and Child Jesus with the infant John the Baptist and an angel, in a rocky setting which gives the paintings their usual name.
The composition shows a grouping of four figures, the Virgin Mary, the Christ Child, the infant John the Baptist, and an angel, who are situated in a mysterious, rocky grotto. This setting gives the artwork its name, ''Virgin of the Rocks''. The figures are arranged in a triangular formation, with the Virgin Mary at the apex, emphasizing her importance within the scene. The painting is celebrated for Leonardo's innovative use of chiaroscuro and sfumato techniques, which create a soft transition between colors and tones, contributing to a sense of depth and realism.
The Paris version is believed to have been painted between 1483 and 1486, as part of a commission for the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception in Milan. The painting was to be a central piece for an altarpiece in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception at the church of San Francesco Grande. The London version was painted at a later date and is considered by some experts to be partly the work of Leonardo's assistants, although this attribution is a subject of ongoing debate.
The ''Virgin of the Rocks'' in its two versions is a significant work in the oeuvre of Leonardo for its masterful rendering of figures and landscape and its emblematic use of light and shadow, which would go on to influence the development of High Renaissance art. The paintings are also notable for their symbolic and theological complexity, with scholars proposing various interpretations of the figures' gestures and the landscape's significance. The ''Virgin of the Rocks'' continues to be a subject of scholarly interest and is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Renaissance art.
