Painting Description
The ''Mona Lisa'' is a half-length portrait painting by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. Considered an archetypal masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, it has been described as "the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world." The painting's novel qualities include the subject's enigmatic expression, the monumentality of the composition, the subtle modelling of forms, and the atmospheric illusionism.
Believed to have been painted between 1503 and 1506, and continuing until perhaps 1517, the work is thought to depict Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Florentine merchant Francesco del Giocondo. It is on permanent display at the Louvre Museum in Paris since 1797. The ''Mona Lisa'' is one of the most valuable paintings in the world. It holds the Guinness World Record for the highest known insurance valuation in history at $100 million in 1962, which is worth nearly $870 million in 2021 dollars.
Leonardo's painting is a notable work for its pioneering use of the sfumato technique, a method of allowing tones and colors to shade gradually into one another, producing softened outlines or hazy forms. The ''Mona Lisa'''s enigmatic expression, which seems both alluring and aloof, has given the portrait universal fame. The painting's originality also lies in the composition. By positioning the sitter in front of an imaginary landscape, Leonardo is credited with inventing the portrait formula that would serve as a model for future generations of artists.
The ''Mona Lisa'' has been the subject of numerous studies by art historians and scientists alike. The painting's theft from the Louvre in 1911 and its subsequent return has only added to its mystique and fame. Over the centuries, this quintessential work of art has been a source of inspiration for many, and it continues to fascinate and intrigue audiences worldwide.
