Painting Description
The ''Mona Lisa'' is a half-length portrait painting by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. Considered an archetypal masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, it has been described as "the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world." The painting's novel qualities include the subject's enigmatic expression, the monumentality of the composition, the subtle modelling of forms, and the atmospheric illusionism.
Painted in oil on a white Lombardy poplar panel, the work is believed to have been commissioned by the wealthy Florentine merchant Francesco del Giocondo for his wife Lisa Gherardini, and is hence also known as ''La Gioconda''. The painting's title ''Mona Lisa'' stems from a description by Renaissance art historian Giorgio Vasari, who wrote "Leonardo undertook to paint, for Francesco del Giocondo, the portrait of Mona Lisa, his wife." "Mona" in Italian is a polite form of address originating as "ma donna" – similar to "Ma’am", "Madam", or "my lady" in English.
Leonardo began the project in 1503 and continued working on it for several years, bringing it to completion in 1517. It is believed that he continued refining the painting until his death in 1519. The ''Mona Lisa'' was acquired by King Francis I of France and is now the property of the French Republic, on permanent display at the Louvre Museum in Paris since 1797.
The painting's fame escalated in the 19th and 20th centuries due to its theft in 1911, its subsequent return, and the overpainting debates. The ''Mona Lisa'' has been reproduced countless times, reflecting its status as a cultural icon. The mystery of Lisa's smile, the painting's exquisite detail, the layers of glazing, and the three-dimensional appearance of the subject have intrigued art lovers and scientists alike, leading to extensive research and discussions about the painting's originality and the identity of the subject. Leonardo's use of sfumato—a technique of allowing tones and colors to shade gradually into one another, producing softened outlines or hazy forms—has been particularly admired and studied by artists and scholars. The ''Mona Lisa'' remains one of the most celebrated and influential paintings in the history of art.
