Painting Description
The ''Mona Lisa'' is a half-length portrait painting by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. Considered an archetypal masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, it has been described as "the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world." The painting's novel qualities include the subject's enigmatic expression, the monumentality of the composition, the subtle modeling of forms, and the atmospheric illusionism.
The work is presumed to have been painted between 1503 and 1506; however, Leonardo may have continued working on it as late as 1517. It was acquired by King Francis I of France and is now the property of the French Republic, on permanent display at the Louvre Museum in Paris since 1797. The ''Mona Lisa'' is one of the most valuable paintings in the world. It holds the Guinness World Record for the highest known insurance valuation in history at $100 million in 1962, which is worth nearly $870 million in 2021 dollars.
The subject of the portrait is Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Francesco del Giocondo, and is named in Italian as ''La Gioconda'', meaning "the jovial one," a pun on the feminine form of her married name Giocondo and her disposition. In French, the title of the painting is ''La Joconde''. Leonardo's use of sfumato—a technique of allowing tones and colors to shade gradually into one another, producing softened outlines or hazy forms—was innovative and contributes to the painting's dreamlike quality.
The ''Mona Lisa'''s fame is reinforced by its role in the arts and popular culture, and it has been the subject of a wide range of literary and scholarly debates over the centuries, concerning the identity of the sitter, Leonardo's intentions, and the artwork's extensive legacy. Its theft from the Louvre in 1911 and subsequent return helped solidify its status as a symbol of both high art and popular culture. The painting's elusive quality has driven both admiration and scrutiny, with audiences and critics alike seeking to interpret the subject's mind state and the reason behind her smile.
