Painting Description
''The Madonna of the Yarnwinder'' is a subject depicted by Leonardo da Vinci in at least one, and perhaps two, paintings begun in 1499 or later. Leonardo was recorded as being at work on a painting of this subject in Florence in 1501; it is uncertain whether he completed it by the time of his departure from Florence in 1506. The composition shows the Virgin Mary seated in a landscape with the Christ Child, who reaches for a yarnwinder, symbolic of the cross and the Passion.
The attribution of the subject to Leonardo was made in the 19th century, based on the similarity of its composition to that of his ''The Virgin and Child with St. Anne'' in the Louvre and on the high quality of the faces. Two versions of ''The Madonna of the Yarnwinder'' are widely accepted as partially by Leonardo, and are in the collections of the National Galleries of Scotland and the private collection of the Duke of Buccleuch. Both versions are thought to have been begun by Leonardo but completed by his pupils.
The painting has been a subject of legal dispute in the 21st century, as the Buccleuch version was stolen in 2003 and recovered in 2007. Its attribution to Leonardo has been a matter of dispute among scholars, with some attributing it to his workshop or a specific pupil rather than to the master himself. The subject's popularity is evidenced by the numerous copies and variations by artists of the 16th century, reflecting its significance in Leonardo's oeuvre and its influence on the development of Renaissance art.
