Painting Description
''The Last Supper'' is a late 15th-century mural painting by Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci housed by the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. The work is one of the most iconic and widely recognized pieces of Christian art, depicting the scene from the Gospel of John, Chapter 13, Verse 21, in which Jesus announces that one of his Twelve Apostles would betray him. The Last Supper measures 460 cm × 880 cm (180 in × 350 in) and covers an end wall of the dining hall at the monastery.
Leonardo began working on The Last Supper in 1495 and completed it in 1498—although he did not work on the piece continuously. The painting represents a significant innovation in the tradition of Last Supper depictions, as Leonardo chose to capture the immediate reaction of the disciples to Jesus's announcement rather than the more common scene of the Eucharist. Each apostle is depicted with a unique expression and posture, conveying shock, outrage, or bewilderment, contributing to the dynamic composition of the piece.
The Last Supper is renowned for its intricate detail, composition, and use of perspective. Leonardo's use of oil and tempera on a dry wall rather than the traditional fresco technique has resulted in a delicate work that has undergone numerous restorations over the centuries due to deterioration. Despite this, the painting has retained its powerful impact and continues to attract scholarly study and visitor admiration.
Leonardo's innovative approach to the depiction of character and emotional intensity, his mastery of lighting and perspective, and the painting's profound influence on the development of Renaissance art make The Last Supper a masterpiece of Western art. Its status as an iconic cultural symbol has embedded it deeply in the collective consciousness, making it a subject of admiration, scholarly debate, and inspiration for countless reproductions and references in popular culture.
