Painting Description
''The Last Supper'' is a late 15th-century mural painting by Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci housed by the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. It is one of the most admired, most studied, and most reproduced paintings the world has ever known. The work is assumed to have been started around 1495–96 and was commissioned as part of a renovation plan for the church and its convent buildings by Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. The painting represents the scene of the Last Supper of Jesus with his apostles, as it is told in the Gospel of John, 13:21. Leonardo has depicted the consternation that occurred among the Twelve Disciples when Jesus announced that one of them would betray him.
Da Vinci's interpretation of the Last Supper, which measures 460 cm × 880 cm (180 in × 350 in), has been praised for its perspective and dramatic intensity. Leonardo's use of the technique known as ''a secco'' on the plaster of the wall has led to the poor preservation of the mural, which began to deteriorate within a few years of its completion. As a result, the piece has undergone numerous restorations, the most recent being completed in 1999.
The Last Supper has been the subject of numerous scholarly studies and writings, particularly concerning its artistic representation and the innovative techniques employed by Leonardo. The painting's distinctive approach to depicting the figures in the scene has had a profound influence on the development of Western art, and its complex symbolism and incorporation of psychological expression have contributed to its continued fascination and study. The work is regarded as one of the greatest artistic achievements of the High Renaissance and remains a quintessential example of Leonardo's genius.
