Painting Description
''The Last Supper'' is a late 15th-century mural painting by Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci housed by the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. It is one of the most admired, most studied, and most reproduced paintings the world has ever known. The work is assumed to have been started around 1495-96 and was commissioned as part of a renovation plan for the church and its convent buildings by Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. The painting represents the scene of the Last Supper of Jesus with his apostles, as told in the Gospel of John, 13:21. Leonardo has depicted the consternation that occurred among the Twelve Disciples when Jesus announced that one of them would betray him.
Da Vinci's interpretation of the Last Supper is notable for its realistic detail and for the emotional resonance and psychological complexity of the figures. Leonardo's use of the innovative technique of oil and tempera on plaster, instead of the traditional fresco method, allowed for greater detail and luminosity but also contributed to the painting's quick deterioration over time. The composition of the figures in the scene is masterful; the grouping of the disciples into threes, the perspective of the room leading to the figure of Christ at the center, and the use of geometric shapes to create a harmonious and balanced effect.
Despite its poor state of preservation, ''The Last Supper'' has had a profound influence on art and has generated a wealth of scholarly study and artistic interpretation. The painting's fame intensified in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, partly due to its mention in popular books and films, such as Dan Brown's novel ''The Da Vinci Code''. Its iconic status continues to draw visitors from around the world, and it remains a touchstone of Renaissance art and a testament to Leonardo da Vinci's genius.
