Painting Description
''The Last Supper'' (''Il Cenacolo'' or ''L'Ultima Cena'') is one of the most iconic and influential works of art by the Italian polymath Leonardo da Vinci. A masterpiece of the High Renaissance, this mural painting was created between 1495 and 1498 under the commission of Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, for the Dominican convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. The work measures 460 cm × 880 cm (180 in × 350 in) and covers an end wall of the dining hall at the monastery.
Leonardo's ''The Last Supper'' depicts the dramatic moment described in the Gospel of John (13:21), when Jesus announces that one of his Twelve Apostles would betray him. The painting is renowned for its emotional intensity and psychological acuity, as Leonardo captures the varied reactions of the apostles through their expressions and gestures. Each apostle is depicted with a realism and character that were unprecedented at the time of the painting's creation.
Da Vinci's innovative use of perspective and chiaroscuro (the contrast of light and shadow) brings a three-dimensional quality to the two-dimensional wall, drawing the viewer's attention directly to the vanishing point behind Jesus' head. This compositional technique, along with the use of a coffered ceiling in the painted room, creates an illusionistic extension of the convent's refectory space.
The painting's technique was experimental. Leonardo chose to work with tempera and oil on a dry wall rather than using the traditional fresco method, which involves painting on wet plaster. This decision led to the rapid deterioration of the artwork, and ''The Last Supper'' has undergone numerous restorations over the centuries, the most recent being completed in 1999. Despite these restorations, much of the original painting has been lost and what remains is fragile.
''The Last Supper'' has had a profound impact on both religious and secular art, influencing countless artists and becoming a central work in Christian iconography. It has been subject to various interpretations and has been widely referenced in popular culture. The painting has also been the subject of much scholarly debate regarding its hidden meanings, symbolism, and Leonardo's intentions. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it remains one of the most studied and visited paintings in the world, continuing to inspire awe and admiration for its artistic mastery and historical significance.
