Painting Description
''The Last Supper'' is a late 15th-century mural painting by Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci housed by the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. It is one of the most admired, studied, and reproduced works of art in the world. The painting represents the scene of the Last Supper of Jesus with his apostles, as told in the Gospel of John, 13:21. Leonardo has depicted the consternation that occurred among the Twelve Disciples when Jesus announced that one of them would betray him.
The work measures 460 cm × 880 cm (180 in × 350 in) and covers an end wall of the dining hall at the monastery. It is noted for its dramatic composition and the use of perspective to create the illusion of space behind the table. The painting includes a diverse range of emotional expressions and postures, in response to the announcement of the betrayal, which gives the painting a dynamic quality that was unparalleled at the time.
Leonardo began working on ''The Last Supper'' in 1495 and completed it in 1498—although he did not work on the piece continuously. The innovative technique he used to create the mural, which involved applying tempera and oil paint atop a ground that was mainly gesso, pitch, and mastic, led to the rapid deterioration of the fresco. This method diverged from the traditional fresco technique, where pigments mixed with water are applied to wet plaster.
Despite numerous restoration attempts, the piece has suffered significant damage over the centuries. The most recent major restoration, completed in 1999, removed centuries of grime, pollution, and misguided restoration attempts, returning the mural to a state closer to Leonardo's original, though some critics argue that much of the work's authentic character has been lost.
''The Last Supper'' has been the subject of various scholarly studies and interpretations and has influenced not only art but also popular culture. Its fame intensified when it was featured in the plot of Dan Brown's novel ''The Da Vinci Code'', which proposed a controversial interpretation of the figures in the painting. Today, ''The Last Supper'' remains a profound symbol of Christian art, a masterpiece of the Renaissance, and a testament to Leonardo da Vinci's genius as an artist and innovator.
