Painting Description
"The Battle of Anghiari" is a lost painting by Leonardo da Vinci, sometimes referred to as "The Lost Leonardo," which was created between 1503 and 1505. It depicted the Battle of Anghiari, a military engagement that took place on June 29, 1440, between the Republic of Florence and the Republic of Milan along with their respective allies. Commissioned by the Florentine Republic for the Sala del Gran Consiglio (Great Council Hall) in the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence, the work was intended to celebrate the Florentine victory.
Leonardo's innovative techniques and his quest for dynamic representation of motion and battle were encapsulated in this mural. Although the original mural itself has been lost to history, it is known through preparatory studies, copies, and written descriptions. The most famous aspect of the painting, a central scene known as the "Fight for the Standard," was recorded in a copy by Peter Paul Rubens and is often used to represent the entire composition.
The painting was to be executed using an experimental fresco technique which involved the application of wax, but the method proved unsuccessful, leading to the deterioration of the artwork. Over the centuries, the mural became obscured and was eventually believed to be overlaid by another fresco, "The Battle of Marciano" by Giorgio Vasari, painted in 1563.
Leonardo's "The Battle of Anghiari" has been the subject of extensive art historical research and scientific investigation, as scholars have attempted to uncover the fate of the original work. Despite its physical absence, the painting remains an important part of Leonardo's artistic legacy and is considered a masterpiece of Renaissance art for its ambitious scale and the innovative depiction of movement and anatomy.
