Painting Description
"Study for the Sforza Monument" (1488-89) is a series of sketches and preparatory works by the Italian polymath Leonardo da Vinci, intended for an equestrian statue to honor Francesco Sforza, the Duke of Milan. The monument was commissioned by Ludovico Sforza, the Duke's son and Leonardo's patron during his first stay in Milan. Although the final statue was never completed due to political turmoil and technical difficulties, the studies remain a testament to Leonardo's innovative approach to art and engineering.
Leonardo's ambition was to create the largest equestrian statue in the world, a testament to his patron's power and the artist's own genius. The studies for the Sforza monument showcase Leonardo's meticulous approach to anatomy, both human and equine, as well as his understanding of proportion, movement, and the expressive potential of monumental sculpture. These sketches also reflect his deep engagement with the technical challenges of casting such a large bronze figure, as evidenced by his notes and diagrams related to the casting process.
The surviving studies are dispersed across various collections and include a range of materials such as pen and ink drawings, red chalk sketches, and detailed notes. Among the most notable of these is the pen and ink drawing "Horse and Rider" (c. 1490), which is housed in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle. This particular study reveals the dynamic posture Leonardo envisioned for the horse, capturing a moment of tension and vitality that was to characterize the finished work.
While the Sforza monument itself was never realized, the preparatory studies offer insight into Leonardo's interdisciplinary genius and his impact on the Renaissance understanding of art as a synthesis of observation, science, and aesthetic innovation. The legacy of the Sforza monument studies can be seen in the subsequent development of equestrian statuary and the broader field of Renaissance art.
