Painting Description
''Salvator Mundi'' is a painting attributed to Italian Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci, dated to c. 1500. The artwork depicts Jesus Christ in Renaissance dress, making the sign of the cross with his right hand, while holding a transparent, non-refracting orb in his left, symbolizing the 'Savior of the World' (Latin: Salvator Mundi). The painting merges Renaissance ideals of scientific observation and the rendering of nature with iconography that speaks to the divine role of Christ. Its provenance is traced back to the collection of King Charles I of England in the mid-17th century, and it has a complex history of ownership, having been lost and rediscovered, sold and resold numerous times.
The authenticity of ''Salvator Mundi'' as a work by Leonardo has been a subject of intense debate among scholars, with several leading experts either endorsing or questioning its attribution to the master. The painting underwent extensive restoration and analysis, which revealed techniques and materials consistent with Leonardo's known works. However, the extent of the restoration has also raised concerns about how much of the original painting remains.
''Salvator Mundi'' gained widespread public attention when it was sold at auction by Christie's in November 2017 for $450.3 million, setting a new record for the most expensive painting ever sold. The sale price reflected not only the artwork's potential historical significance but also the market's view of its rarity and allure as a rediscovered Leonardo. The painting's current owner is the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Abu Dhabi, and it was expected to be displayed at the Louvre Abu Dhabi. However, its unveiling has been postponed for reasons that have not been publicly disclosed, adding another layer of mystery to the painting's already enigmatic history.
