Painting Description
The reverse side of the portrait of Ginevra de' Benci is a lesser-known aspect of a celebrated artwork by Leonardo da Vinci, created circa 1474–1478. The portrait, which is housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., is one of the few paintings by Leonardo that can be found outside of Europe and is the only painting by him in the Americas. The obverse of the panel features a portrait of Ginevra de' Benci, a young woman from a wealthy family in Florence, and is renowned for its delicate depiction and psychological depth.
On the reverse side of the panel, Leonardo painted a symbolic motif, which is not uncommon for portraits of this period. This side features a juniper bush, an emblematic detail that plays on Ginevra's name, as "ginepro" is Italian for juniper. Juniper was also symbolic of chastity, aligning with the subject's virtuous reputation. Above the juniper, there is a scroll with the Latin inscription "Virtutem Forma Decorat," which translates to "beauty adorns virtue." The intertwined motifs of laurel and palm branches, which are also present, represent honor and fame.
The reverse side of the portrait is an important example of the integration of portraiture with emblematic symbolism, a practice that was gaining popularity during the Renaissance. The inclusion of these symbols provides insight into the character and social status of the sitter and reflects the cultural and artistic practices of the time. The painting's dual-sided nature also exemplifies the innovative spirit of Leonardo, who was known for his multidisciplinary genius and his ability to infuse artworks with layers of meaning.
The reverse side of Ginevra de' Benci's portrait is not only a testament to Leonardo's artistic skill but also a valuable historical document that offers a glimpse into the conventions and values of the Italian Renaissance. Its conservation and display continue to contribute to the understanding of Leonardo's oeuvre and the broader context of 15th-century art.
