Painting Description
''Portrait of Ginevra de' Benci'' is a seminal artwork by the Italian Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci, created circa 1474–1478. This portrait is notable for being the only painting by Leonardo on public display in the Americas, housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. It is also one of the few female portraits attributed to the artist, alongside the iconic ''Mona Lisa''.
The subject of the painting, Ginevra de' Benci, was a young woman from a wealthy family in Florence and is believed to have been painted on the occasion of her marriage to Luigi di Bernardo Niccolini at the age of 16. The artwork is renowned for its subtle rendering of the sitter's character and the innovative use of a three-quarter profile, which was a departure from the traditional profile portraits of the time. Leonardo's mastery in capturing the delicacy of Ginevra's expression and the detailed representation of her hands and the botanical elements in the background is widely admired.
The reverse side of the panel features a wreath of laurel and palm, encircling a sprig of juniper, which is a pun on Ginevra's name, as "ginepro" means juniper in Italian. Below the botanical elements is a scroll with the motto "Virtutem Forma Decorat" (Beauty Adorns Virtue). The double-sided painting suggests that it may have been created as a commemorative object, possibly a betrothal portrait.
The ''Portrait of Ginevra de' Benci'' is celebrated for its historical significance and its demonstration of Leonardo's early development as a portraitist. Its acquisition by the National Gallery of Art in 1967, for a then-record price, marked an important moment in the history of art collecting and the appreciation of Renaissance works outside of Europe. The painting continues to be a subject of scholarly study, as it provides insights into Leonardo's technique, his understanding of human psychology, and his approach to nature as a backdrop for portraiture.
