Painting Description
''Portrait of Ginevra de' Benci'' is a painting by Leonardo da Vinci, completed around 1474–1478. It is a portrait of a young woman, Ginevra de' Benci, a well-known young Florentine aristocrat and intellectual, whose beauty and poetic skills were widely celebrated. The painting is notable for being one of Leonardo's earliest experiments with oil painting, and it is one of the few portraits by the artist that can be definitively attributed to him. It is also his only known portrait of a woman that is not in a profile view.
The artwork is a double-sided panel painting, with the front displaying the portrait of Ginevra and the reverse featuring a symbolic representation of a juniper tree along with a Latin motto. The juniper is a pun on Ginevra's name, as "ginepro" is Italian for juniper, and the motto translates to "Beauty Adorns Virtue." The portrait is celebrated for its subtle modeling of forms, especially in the depiction of the sitter's face, and for the detailed rendering of her hands and the botanical elements in the background, which showcase Leonardo's keen interest in nature.
The ''Portrait of Ginevra de' Benci'' is housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and is the only painting by Leonardo on public display in the Americas. The painting's provenance includes a history of ownership by various European nobility before being acquired by the Kress Foundation and subsequently donated to the National Gallery of Art.
The ''Portrait of Ginevra de' Benci'' is significant in the oeuvre of Leonardo da Vinci as it demonstrates his developing style and technique, as well as his psychological insight into his subjects. It is a key work for understanding the early development of portrait painting in the Italian Renaissance and continues to be a subject of scholarly study and public fascination.
