Painting Description
''Portrait of Cecilia Gallerani (Lady with an Ermine)'' is a painting by the Italian Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci, completed around 1489–1490. The subject of the portrait is Cecilia Gallerani, a young woman from Milan who was the mistress of Leonardo's patron, Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. The painting is one of only four female portraits Leonardo painted, the others being the Mona Lisa, the portrait of Ginevra de' Benci, and La Belle Ferronnière.
The artwork is renowned for its exquisite detail, the delicate rendering of Cecilia Gallerani's features, and the masterful depiction of the ermine she holds, which serves as a symbol of purity and a pun on her lover's name (Ludovico was also known as "L'ermellino," Italian for "the ermine," due to the Order of the Ermine to which he belonged). Leonardo's use of sfumato—a technique of allowing tones and colors to shade gradually into one another, producing softened outlines or hazy forms—is evident in the painting and contributes to its lifelike quality.
The ''Portrait of Cecilia Gallerani'' is celebrated for its portrayal of the sitter's character and the psychological depth Leonardo achieved. The sitter's gaze, slightly turned away, and her enigmatic expression suggest a complex interplay of thoughts and emotions. The painting is also an early example of the artist's experimentation with the three-quarter pose, which was to become a hallmark of Renaissance portraiture.
Currently housed in the Czartoryski Museum, Kraków, Poland, the painting has a storied history, having passed through various hands and collections before finding its current home. It is one of Poland's national treasures and one of Leonardo's most admired works, attracting scholars and art enthusiasts from around the world. The ''Portrait of Cecilia Gallerani'' is not only a testament to Leonardo's skill as a portraitist but also a window into the societal and cultural milieu of the Italian Renaissance.
