Painting Description
The ''Mona Lisa'' is a half-length portrait painting by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. Considered an archetypal masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, it has been described as "the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world." The painting's novel qualities include the subject's enigmatic expression, the monumentality of the composition, the subtle modeling of forms, and the atmospheric illusionism.
The work is presumed to have been painted between 1503 and 1506; however, Leonardo may have continued working on it as late as 1517. It was acquired by King Francis I of France and is now the property of the French Republic, on permanent display at the Louvre Museum in Paris since 1797. The ''Mona Lisa'' is one of the most valuable paintings in the world. It holds the Guinness World Record for the highest known insurance valuation in history at $100 million in 1962, which is worth nearly $870 million in 2021 dollars.
The subject of the portrait is Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Francesco del Giocondo, and is named in Italian as ''La Gioconda'', meaning "the jovial one," a pun on the feminine form of her married name Giocondo and her demeanor. In French, the title of the painting is ''La Joconde''. Leonardo's work has been described as "the most visited, most written about, most sung about, most parodied work of art in the world," and it is the most famous painting in the history of art.
The ''Mona Lisa'' bears a strong influence on the art world; its distinctive composition, the portrayal of the sitter, and the painter's techniques have been widely studied and emulated by artists of subsequent generations. Its fame further increased when it was stolen in 1911 and was missing for two years before being recovered. The painting's allure has been attributed to various factors, from its representation of an ideal woman and the mystery of her smile to the perfect harmony in its design, which has intrigued both art lovers and researchers for centuries.
