Painting Description
The ''Mona Lisa'' is a half-length portrait painting by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. Considered an archetypal masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, it has been described as "the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world." The painting's novel qualities include the subject's enigmatic expression, the monumentality of the composition, the subtle modelling of forms, and the atmospheric illusionism.
Leonardo began painting the ''Mona Lisa'' in 1503 or 1504 in Florence, Italy. Although the Louvre states that it was "doubtless painted between 1503 and 1506", the art historian Martin Kemp says that there are some difficulties in confirming the actual dates with certainty. In fact, it is believed that Leonardo may have continued working on it as late as 1517. It was acquired by King Francis I of France and is now the property of the French Republic, on permanent display at the Louvre Museum in Paris since 1797.
The subject of the portrait is generally believed to be Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Florence merchant Francesco del Giocondo, but there has been much speculation and debate regarding the true identity of the sitter. Leonardo's use of sfumato—a technique of allowing tones and colors to shade gradually into one another, producing softened outlines or hazy forms—was innovative and contributes to the painting's enigmatic quality. The ''Mona Lisa'''s mysterious smile has led to a wide array of speculations and interpretations.
The painting's fame increased significantly in the 19th century due to the Romantic poets and novelists, and it became an object of pilgrimage in the 20th and 21st centuries. The ''Mona Lisa'' has been stolen from the Louvre and recovered in a high-profile case in 1911, an event that contributed to its status as a universally recognized icon. It has also been vandalized on several occasions, but has survived and been meticulously restored, ensuring its continued legacy as one of the most celebrated works of art in human history.
