Painting Description
The ''Mona Lisa'' is a half-length portrait painting by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. Considered an archetypal masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, it has been described as "the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world." The painting's novel qualities include the subject's enigmatic expression, the monumentality of the composition, the subtle modelling of forms, and the atmospheric illusionism.
Painted in oil on a white Lombardy poplar panel, the work is believed to have been commissioned by the cloth merchant Francesco del Giocondo for his wife Lisa Gherardini, and is often referred to as ''La Gioconda'' in Italian. The painting's title ''Mona Lisa'' stems from a description by Renaissance art historian Giorgio Vasari, who wrote "Leonardo undertook to paint, for Francesco del Giocondo, the portrait of Mona Lisa, his wife." "Mona" in Italian is a polite form of address originating as "ma donna" – similar to "Ma'am", "Madam", or "my lady" in English.
The painting was acquired by King Francis I of France and is now the property of the French Republic, on permanent display at the Louvre Museum in Paris since 1797. The popularity of the ''Mona Lisa'' grew in the mid-19th century because of the Romantic fascination with the painting's perceived enigma and the rise of aesthetic theory. It was further emphasized when it was stolen in 1911 and returned to the Louvre two years later.
The ''Mona Lisa'' has been analyzed and scrutinized by scholars for centuries and is believed to have been painted between 1503 and 1506; however, Leonardo may have continued working on it as late as 1517. The delicate dark veil that covers Mona Lisa's hair, the finely painted veils across her chest, the luminescence of her face, and the shadowy background of rocky crags all contribute to the painting's fascination. Its fame is reinforced by its role in the arts and popular culture, and it has been a subject of poetry, satire, scientific theories, and challenging reproductions across the globe.
