Painting Description
''Madonna with the Yarnwinder'' is a subject depicted by Leonardo da Vinci in at least one, and perhaps two, paintings begun in 1499 or later. Leonardo was recorded as being at work on a painting of this subject in Florence in 1501; it is unclear whether he completed this painting or another version of the subject. The version in the Buccleuch Collection in Scotland is generally accepted as the work of Leonardo; it is known as the ''Buccleuch Madonna''. The ''Lansdowne Madonna'', in a private collection in the United States, is also attributed to Leonardo and as of 2021 is the subject of scholarly debate.
The ''Madonna with the Yarnwinder'' depicts the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child, who is holding a yarnwinder, symbolic of the cross, an allusion to the Crucifixion. The composition shows the Virgin in a dynamic contrapposto pose, with the Christ Child energetically reaching for the yarnwinder, a domestic object that in this context carries deep religious symbolism. Leonardo's innovative approach to the dynamic interplay between mother and child, along with his masterful rendering of anatomy and the delicate modeling of forms, are characteristic of his style.
The painting has a complex provenance and has been subject to several thefts and recoveries. The most famous incident occurred in 2003 when the ''Buccleuch Madonna'' was stolen from Drumlanrig Castle in Scotland but was recovered in 2007. The painting's attribution to Leonardo has been a subject of extensive art historical research and debate, with various experts weighing in on the extent of Leonardo's hand in the work versus that of his pupils and followers.
The ''Madonna with the Yarnwinder'' is significant not only for its artistic merits but also for its insights into Leonardo's workshop practices and the collaborative nature of art production during the Renaissance. It continues to be a focus of scholarly study and a highlight of the collections in which it resides.
