Painting Description
"Madonna Litta" is a celebrated Renaissance painting, traditionally attributed to Leonardo da Vinci and dated to around 1490–1491. The artwork is a half-length depiction of the Virgin Mary nursing the infant Jesus, a subject known in Christian art as the Madonna Lactans. The painting is named after the Litta family of Milan, who once owned it. It is currently housed in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
The painting is executed in oil on a wooden panel and measures 42 cm by 33 cm. It showcases Leonardo's mastery of chiaroscuro and sfumato, techniques that create a soft transition between colors and tones, imbuing the work with a lifelike quality. The Virgin's gaze, directed toward the viewer, and the tender interaction between mother and child reflect the humanism that characterizes much of Leonardo's work.
While the authorship of "Madonna Litta" has been a matter of debate among art historians, the painting is often considered to be predominantly the work of one of Leonardo's pupils, with possible contributions from the master himself. The most notable candidate for the painting's execution is Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio, a member of Leonardo's Milanese workshop, who may have completed the painting based on a design by Leonardo.
The "Madonna Litta" is notable for its refined composition and the emotional connection it establishes with the viewer. The intimate moment captured between the Madonna and Child has been admired for centuries and remains a significant example of Leonardo's influence on the development of religious painting during the High Renaissance. The work's provenance and the questions surrounding its authorship add to its intrigue and historical importance within the oeuvre of Leonardo da Vinci and his school.
