Painting Description
''Lady with an Ermine'' (Italian: ''Dama con l'ermellino'') is a portrait painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci. Created around 1489–1490, the work is one of only four female portraits painted by Leonardo, the others being the ''Mona Lisa'', ''Ginevra de' Benci'', and ''La Belle Ferronnière''. The subject of the painting is identified as Cecilia Gallerani, a young woman from Milan who was the mistress of Leonardo's patron, Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. The ermine she holds in her arms has been interpreted as a symbol of purity and a play on her surname (ermellino is Italian for ermine), or as an emblem of the Duke himself, who was a member of the Order of the Ermine.
The painting is celebrated for its exquisite detail, the delicate rendering of the subject's features, and the innovative use of chiaroscuro—a technique that uses strong contrasts between light and dark to give the illusion of volume to the subject. The ''Lady with an Ermine'' is also noted for its psychological depth, capturing a moment of introspection and the personality of the sitter, which was a departure from the flat and two-dimensional portraits of the time.
The artwork is a small oil painting on a walnut wood panel and measures 54 cm × 39 cm (21 in × 15 in). Over the centuries, it has been owned by various private collectors and has undergone several restorations. The painting currently resides in the Czartoryski Museum, Kraków, Poland, and is one of Poland's national treasures. As a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance and a prime example of Leonardo's portraiture skills, ''Lady with an Ermine'' continues to be a subject of scholarly study and attracts visitors from around the world.
