Painting Description
"La Gioconda", often known in English as the "Mona Lisa", is a portrait painting created by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci around the years 1503 to 1506, though he may have continued working on it as late as 1517. Commissioned by Francesco del Giocondo, a Florentine silk merchant, the painting is thought to be of his wife, Lisa Gherardini, hence the alternative name of 'La Gioconda'. The name directly translates in English to 'the joyful one'.
Synonymous with da Vinci's intricate style, the painting illustrates the artist's brilliant use of sfumato, a technique of blurring lines and colors to give an ethereal quality to the forms. The model's enigmatic facial expression has continued to enthral audiences and scholars alike, contributing to the painting's status as a universally recognized masterpiece of the Renaissance period. It is also known for its innovative use of atmospheric perspective and the subtle modeling of forms.
Originally oil on a poplar wood panel, the dimensions are 77 cm x 53 cm. Having survived theft and vandalism, the painting now is housed in the Musée du Louvre in Paris, France, drawing millions of visitors each year.
The extensive analysis it has undergone over the centuries and its place in popular culture, including numerous reproductions and parodies, have cemented the "Mona Lisa" as an iconic symbol of Western art history. Despite its fame, many aspects of the painting—including the precise identification of the sitter and the landscape in the background—remain subjects of speculation and debate, highlighting the enduring allure and mystery of "La Gioconda".
