Painting Description
''The Last Supper'' (Italian: ''Il Cenacolo'' [il tʃeˈnaːkolo] or ''L'Ultima Cena'' [ˈlultima ˈtʃeːna]), also known as ''La Cène'' in French, is one of the most iconic and widely recognized paintings in the world, created by the renowned Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. This late 15th-century mural painting, which measures 460 cm × 880 cm (180 in × 350 in), is housed in the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. It was commissioned as part of a renovation of the church and convent buildings by Leonardo's patron Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan.
Completed around 1495–1498, ''The Last Supper'' depicts the dramatic moment described in the Gospel of John (13:21), when Jesus announces that one of his Twelve Apostles would betray him. Leonardo's interpretation of this scene is remarkable for its emotional depth and use of space. He abandoned the traditional method of fresco painting and instead used an experimental technique that involved applying tempera paints onto a dry plaster wall. This choice, while allowing for greater detail and luminosity, unfortunately led to the painting's rapid deterioration over time.
Da Vinci's composition is masterful, with Jesus at the center, flanked by groups of three apostles and creating a balanced and harmonious effect despite the emotional turmoil depicted. Each apostle reacts differently to Jesus' announcement, providing a range of human emotions that were meticulously studied and rendered by the artist. The use of perspective leads the viewer's eye toward the vanishing point behind Jesus' head, emphasizing his significance in the narrative.
''The Last Supper'' has been the subject of numerous restorations over the centuries due to its fragile state, with the most extensive one completed in 1999 after 21 years of work. Despite these efforts, the painting continues to face challenges due to environmental factors and the inherent instability of Leonardo's medium choice.
As one of the most studied and analyzed paintings in the history of art, ''The Last Supper'' has had a profound influence on both religious and secular art and continues to inspire awe and scholarly interest. Its iconic status has been cemented not only by its artistic brilliance but also by its appearances in popular culture and its symbolic resonance across different faiths and societies.
