Painting Description
''Female Head'' (Italian: ''Testa di donna''), also known as ''La Scapigliata'', is an artwork attributed to the Italian High Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci. Created around 1508, this piece is a testament to Leonardo's profound understanding of human anatomy, his mastery of chiaroscuro, and his innovative techniques in rendering the human form. The work is executed in oil, earth, and white lead pigments on a poplar wood panel, measuring 24.7 cm by 21 cm. It is currently housed in the Galleria Nazionale di Parma, Italy.
The ''Female Head'' is notable for its unfinished state, which provides insight into Leonardo's artistic process. The subject's head emerges from the raw, unpainted background, with her hair appearing disheveled, hence the name ''La Scapigliata'', which translates to "the disheveled one". The woman's gaze is soft yet penetrating, and her features are rendered with a delicate sfumato technique, a method Leonardo perfected to create subtle transitions between light and shadow.
Although the attribution to Leonardo has been a subject of debate among art historians, the ''Female Head'' is widely accepted as a work from his studio, if not directly by his hand. The drawing and modeling of the figure reflect Leonardo's studies of physiognomy and his lifelong interest in depicting the human condition. The artwork's enigmatic quality and the ethereal representation of the female subject are characteristic of Leonardo's oeuvre, aligning with his other famous works such as the ''Mona Lisa'' and ''Lady with an Ermine''.
The ''Female Head'' continues to captivate audiences and scholars alike, inviting interpretations of the subject's identity and her place within Leonardo's body of work. As an unfinished piece, it also serves as a valuable educational resource, offering a window into the techniques and materials used by one of the most influential artists in history.
