Painting Description
The Codex Atlanticus is a twelve-volume bound set of drawings and writings (in Italian) by the renowned Italian polymath Leonardo da Vinci. The name of the codex comes from the size of its pages, which is reminiscent of the Atlantic folio; large paper used for atlases and geographical publications. It is the largest collection of Leonardo's papers ever assembled, comprising a vast array of topics and interests, from mechanics to the flight of birds. The codex spans over 1,119 leaves, with content dating from 1478 to 1519, the year of Leonardo's death.
This monumental compendium showcases Leonardo's insatiable curiosity and his multifaceted genius. It includes studies on a variety of subjects, such as anatomy, astronomy, botany, chemistry, geometry, mathematics, mechanical engineering, optics, physics, and topography. The Codex Atlanticus also contains numerous inventions, sketches, and thoughts, illustrating Leonardo's contributions to various fields and his forward-thinking approach to science and art.
The codex was compiled by the sculptor Pompeo Leoni in the late 16th century, long after Leonardo's death. Leoni disassembled original notebooks and rearranged their contents into the current format, sometimes cutting pages to fit the new layout. This process, unfortunately, disrupted the original order of Leonardo's notes. The Codex Atlanticus is housed in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, Italy, and is considered one of the most significant repositories of Leonardo's works, reflecting his unparalleled ability to combine art and science.
The Codex Atlanticus is not only a treasure trove for historians and scholars but also a testament to the enduring legacy of Leonardo da Vinci's intellectual pursuits. Its pages continue to inspire and inform contemporary audiences about the remarkable breadth of Leonardo's interests and the depth of his investigations into the natural world and the principles underlying artistic creation.
