Painting Description
''The Battle of Anghiari'' was a fresco by the Italian Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci, depicting the Battle of Anghiari, a military engagement that took place on June 29, 1440, between the forces of the Republic of Florence and the Republic of Milan along with their allies. Commissioned by the Signoria of Florence in 1503 to adorn the Hall of Five Hundred (Salone dei Cinquecento) in the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence, the artwork was intended to celebrate the Florentine victory.
Leonardo's innovative techniques and his mastery of depicting motion and emotion were expected to culminate in a grand visual statement of the Florentine republic's military prowess. The central scene of the battle that Leonardo focused on was the fight for the standard, a moment of intense struggle and drama. However, the fresco remained unfinished due to Leonardo's experimental technique of encaustic painting, which involved adding wax to the pigment, leading to the paint failing to adhere properly to the wall.
The only glimpses of Leonardo's original design for the ''Battle of Anghiari'' are known through copies made by other artists, the most notable of which is a full-scale drawing by Peter Paul Rubens, which was itself based on a copy by an unknown artist. This has allowed art historians to speculate on the composition and style of what has been described as "the lost Leonardo."
The fresco's fate was sealed when, in 1563, the hall was renovated by Giorgio Vasari, and the original wall containing Leonardo's work was either destroyed or obscured behind a new layer of wall. There has been much debate and research concerning the possibility that Leonardo's original fresco might still exist hidden behind Vasari's work. Despite various investigations, including the use of modern diagnostic techniques, the actual remains of the fresco have not been conclusively identified, leaving the ''Battle of Anghiari'' as one of the most enigmatic and influential works in the history of art, celebrated more for its legendary status and lost potential than for any surviving visual evidence.
