Painting Description
''Annunciation'' (1472–1475) is a painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci. It is housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy, and is considered one of Leonardo's early masterpieces, created during his time at the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio. The painting depicts the biblical scene of the Angel Gabriel announcing to the Virgin Mary that she will conceive and become the mother of Jesus, the Son of God, marking the Incarnation. This subject was very popular for artworks and is known as the Annunciation.
Leonardo's ''Annunciation'' is notable for its detailed representation of the figures and the use of perspective. The angel Gabriel is shown kneeling on one knee, presenting a lily to Mary, a symbol of purity. Mary, who is reading, reacts to the angel's arrival with a gesture of surprise and contemplation. The background of the painting features a detailed landscape, which showcases Leonardo's keen observation of nature and his interest in depicting a realistic setting.
The painting is executed in oil and tempera on a panel measuring 98 cm by 217 cm (38.5 in by 85.4 in). It is believed that Leonardo painted the ''Annunciation'' when he was about 20 years old, and it reflects both his own emerging style and the influence of his master, Verrocchio. The work demonstrates Leonardo's mastery of light and shadow, as well as his understanding of the human form, which would become hallmarks of his later works.
Art historians have studied the ''Annunciation'' for its artistic and historical significance, as well as for the insight it provides into Leonardo's development as an artist. The painting has undergone several restorations to preserve its condition and remains one of the key works for understanding the early phase of Leonardo's career.
