Painting Description
"Abraham Lincoln" by Leonard Wells Volk is a notable plaster life mask of the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, created by the American sculptor Leonard Wells Volk in April 1860. Before Lincoln's nomination for the presidency, Volk, who had met Lincoln in Illinois during the 1858 Senate race, convinced him to sit for a bust. The process involved coating Lincoln's face with plaster, leaving small holes for the nostrils, to create a mold from which the life mask was cast. This artifact provides one of the most accurate representations of the president's appearance during his lifetime.
The life mask is significant not only for its historical value but also for its artistic merit. It captures Lincoln's visage in exquisite detail, offering insight into his somber expression and the lines of his face, which reflect the burdens he bore. The mask is often contrasted with another cast taken by Clark Mills in February 1865, which shows Lincoln's face much more gaunt and careworn, likely due to the ongoing Civil War and personal tragedies.
Leonard Wells Volk's life mask of Abraham Lincoln has been widely reproduced and studied, serving as a primary source for artists and historians alike. The original plaster life mask is housed in several institutions, including the Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the Chicago History Museum. It remains a poignant reminder of Lincoln's humanity and the impact of his presidency on American history.
