Painting Description
Apollo Driving the Chariot of The Sun is a 16th-century oil on canvas painting by Italian Mannerist artist Lelio Orsi. Inspired by the Greek myth of the god, who drove a chariot across the sky representing the movement of the sun, Orsi presents a dynamic, intense visualization of the narrative. The painting measures 193 x 137 cm and is signed and dated on a cartellino.
In the center, Orsi depicts Apollo in all his divine glory, gracefully handling the sun chariot's reins, while the fearsome horses charge across the celestial sphere with a swirling cloud of dust around them, creating an exhilarant dynamism. The inclusion of a semi-circle of golden rays, representing the radiant Sun, envelopes the chariot, emphasizing the significance of Apollo as the Sun God. The beautifully nuanced tones and skilful interplay of light and shadow, are characteristic of Orsi’s unique style in High Renaissance and early Mannerist art.
This iconic work, filled with movement and energy, was a reflection of the shift in artistic styles during the period, and stands as an example of Orsi’s imaginative capacity to translate mythical narratives into vivacious visual tableaus. It is currently housed in the Museo del Prado, Madrid, Spain. Orsi's ability to derivate influence from Parmigianino and Correggio while retaining his artistic identity is expertly demonstrated in this painting.
