Painting Description
"Macao Par Sigismond Himely" is a 19th-century aquatint engraving by Sigismond Himely, based on a work by the French artist and naval officer Barthélemy Lauvergne. The piece is part of a larger collection of illustrations produced during the voyages of the French corvette La Favorite from 1829 to 1832, which were later compiled in the publication "Voyage Autour du Monde" under the command of Captain Cyrille Pierre Théodore Laplace.
The aquatint depicts a view of Macao, a significant trading port in China during the era of European colonial expansion. Himely, known for his skill in the aquatint process, was able to capture the intricate details and atmospheric qualities of Lauvergne's original work, conveying the unique blend of Chinese and Portuguese architectural styles and the bustling activity of the port city.
Lauvergne, who served as the official artist on the expedition, was tasked with documenting the landscapes, peoples, and customs encountered during the journey. His works, including the original depiction of Macao, provided European audiences with visual insights into distant lands during a time when such global travel was limited to a few.
"Macao Par Sigismond Himely" is not only an example of the artistic collaboration between Himely and Lauvergne but also serves as a historical record of Macao's appearance and significance during the early 19th century. The engraving is of interest to historians, art enthusiasts, and collectors who value the intersection of art, exploration, and cultural documentation during the Age of Sail.
